Crack open the champagne, the Summer Vets team, colloquially known as the Clarets, have won their first match in the Surbiton Summer League for at least three years! For the past two seasons, we have drawn the first match of the league and then suffered (some rather substantial) losses for the rest of the fixtures. So forgive us if we're a little excited about tonight's performance...
With a few players seeking regular veterans competition during the winter season, numbers are starting to get a little thin on the Cheam side so we had to draft in some help - two players from other clubs (Epsom & Leatherhead), another returning to the sport after 15 years, and a couple of players who might not quite have qualified for Over 45s (Higgo = Benjamin Button!).
So an injection of quality with Koen & Higgo in the side, Carlos from Epsom running around madly up front and some solid link play all over the pitch for a refreshing change!
Goals to Carlos (at least 2), Higgo, David, Neil G-P, Scott, and apologies to anyone we missed. Haven't had to count this many in a long, long time!!
And as is the norm for the Surbiton Vets Summer League, adjourning to the bar afterwards was most enjoyable.
Special thanks to Maloney for stepping up to umpire at late notice.
