With Cheam Men's 1s unbeaten since October 2014 going into this game, and playing our main rivals for the Championship, this was sure to be a tough and tight contest. This game had been rearranged from December and so the two main rivals for the Division title had been kept waiting to meet each other.

Looking at the tables and the stats, this should have been an extremely tight contest. Unfortunately it did not materialise in that way, as Surbiton "Academy" came to the party like a cocked gun - that is to say, 'fully loaded'. As their side rocked up it was rather reminiscent of Falcao turning out in a match for the U21s. Surbiton seemed to take the 'Man City approach' to Academy development with about 2 young players in their side. Let's just say that if this represents their youth development approach then Surbiton may be in a bit of trouble further down the line - most of this team will be in the Vets in 5 years time!

Cheam battled manfully against the stacked deck but, rather unsurprisingly, this was not a close or even contest. Surbiton banged in the goals and Cheam scored two as a consolation late on, to give the crowd who had turned out and provided excellent support something to cheer for. The first, a classy goal made by Will Gault and finished by the Muirhamster, Andrew Muir Wood. The second, an excellent dragflick by Seb Jennings.

Although Cheam 1's unbeaten run has come to an end, that was never the season target. It was (1) get promotion and (2) win championship, in that order. (1) is still firmly on track and (2) remains in our own hands. The key thing is how we react to this defeat in the next game...
