Points slip through Cheam’s fingers in the final minute

By Chris Blackmore

It was a tough day, and with a tricky away game at Trinity looming over us many of the Tweed Brigade were nursing hangovers and trying to recover from exploits of various Friday night escapades. However, rocking up to bolster the team were the heroes of old, those legends of times gone by… Ted decided to shake off his imaginary injuries to return to the side and dominate the midfield, whilst the Eales brothers managed to once again make time from their busy schedules to fit in some ‘Beast-Mode’ hockey with seventy minutes of non-stop running.

With a stellar line-up, Cheam started strongly and put a lot of pressure on the Trinity defence in the opening stages. Wave after wave of Cheam attacks had Trinity on the back foot, but like many Jehovah’s Witnesses, we just couldn’t convert. This gave Trinity their way in, and through their very pacey wingers, the tides turned and Trinity broke out of this spell. Unfortunately we conceded through a total lack of marking, allowing for Trinity’s forward to ghost his was into the D and pick up the pieces to finish. However, Trinity would have been out of sight by half time if it were not for the heroism of Blossom, who was peppered so much that we had to ask the waiter to take him back to the kitchen. He shared the MOTM votes with James Ross, who excelled at taking out opposition players and weakening their bare eleven side. Despite the fact that Blossom was on the receiving end of so many shots, the defence were doing their best to help him out, with Taylor flinging himself around like a rag-doll cutting out much of the service to Trinity’s forwards. He was on the floor so much and often to slide around, that Gaz got jealous and decided to join in with a sensational swing and a miss that ended with a face full of astroturf.

The second half saw Cheam once again start strongly, and we were rewarded with a goal from Alex putting us back on equal terms. The second half was a scrappy and scruffy affair, with tempers rising alongside an unforgiving and unrelenting pace. Marcus was orchestrating play in the middle of the park, nearly assisting Steve and even coming close himself. Yet Trinity were still plugging away and the hockey was just like the Human Centipede… End to end, and not so pretty times. However, the match finished with utter disappointment, as Molly’s foot decided to defect and poke the ball past Blossom for a crushing own goal with just a minute to go. Obviously as a consequence Molly can look forward to washing the away kits, and wallowing in the knowledge that he was overwhelmingly voted as DOTD.

It was an ending that many of the Trinity players admitted was unfair, and that a draw would have been a fitting result for such a well-fought and equal match. So we all walked away pointless with a not-so-happy ending… Well, except for Alex and his ‘sports massage’.
