“Dodge this!” Trinity deliver blow to Cheam’s recent form

By Chris Blackmore

After a two week bounce of wins, and a surge off the bottom of the table, spirits were high at Nonsuch this weekend. With another strong team put together, all we had to do was dream big and put in a performance. After some controversial umpiring in Saturday’s early game (once again, apologies to the Ladies 2s for my decision-making, or lack of…) it was our time to shine… However, after a hard-fought contest in the November chill, Trinity walked away with all three points. Both teams gave it their all, but unfortunately Trinity managed to find the net just a couple of times more than was desirable, and left Nonsuch as the victors.

Cheam’s recent form showed in the early sections of the game, storming to a two goal lead in around ten minutes. Things looked positive and for a while I forgot all about 2016 and its troubles… However things took a turn south, as Trinity managed to worm their way back into the game with some very cheeky goals slipping in at the near posts. In the words of Sherlock Holmes, “The game was afoot!” And much like a Sherlock Holmes plot, the proceedings were confusing and convoluted from there.

Energy and effort all over the pitch managed to maintain the score-draw until half-time, and give us a moment to calm down and collect our thoughts. This was much needed for Bevan, who at times in the first half looked like a Looney Toons character with steam about to fly out of his ears. Unhappy with some umpiring decisions (he can take comfort in talking to some Ladies 2s players), Bevan spent most of his glorious return gritting his teeth and mumbling profanities.

However, after the break Trinity exploded with high intensity and it was their turn to take a two goal lead. On the back foot, Cheam found their way into the game late on to give Trinity pause for thought, but unfortunately a well-worked fifth for the away side, with only two minutes to spare, sealed their victory.

I can’t take anything away from Cheam, who worked their socks off all game. Some so much that they didn’t even know we had lost… But alas we did, and next week will see us ensure that this is a momentary blip in a new era for the 3s season!
