Cheam K.O. O.Ks

By Chris Blackmore

Just like the return of Gandalf to Helms Deep, this week saw our very own wizard (in front of goal) reappear, at such a dark and desperate time, to change our fortunes and bring victory. Yes you read that correctly. Do not adjust your monitor, and do not start booking a Specsavers appointment… The Cheam 3s finally have points on the board… And they did so in such emphatic fashion.

In the brisk morning chill of Nonsuch, Cheam 3s faced off against Old Kingstonian 1s in a thrilling contest that had more twists than a Danish pastry. Despite taking the lead twice, O.Ks left the pitch empty-handed after a 5-2 loss. Throughout the weeks I have been constantly stating that “Teamwork makes the Dream Work” and this weekend I was proven right, as our four different goal scorers included both centre-backs. Coleman, Powell, Nick and Molly all found the back of the net in a display that made me far too happy to be able to put into words.

Last season’s captain and top goal-scorer decided to take a break from running around without a stick, and return to running around with a stick. Coleman’s return struck fear into the opposition defence, and his constant work ethic and danger in front of goal led to them taking him down by any means necessary. I can’t blame them, it was a display that even had me wanting to wrestle him to the floor, but unlike O.Ks, I managed to control my urges… A far more familiar face to O.Ks was Chris Powell who, after switching allegiances last season, was very keen to get a win this weekend. He did everything he could to ensure that would happen, and with two finely taken goals, Chris succeeded in bending Old Kingstonian’s defence over and taking them to (Mike)Brown town. These two share the plaudits, and also the MOTM votes for the week, top work!

Aside from these two, the whole team deserve credit for their resilience and spirit throughout the match. Going down twice can be enough to have heads drop, but the constant work and belief was there and it was duly rewarded. Despite conceding two goals, the defence picked themselves up and managed to shut-up-shop, halting any O.Ks advances and setting us off on counter-attacks. Nick and Molly even fancied themselves in front of goal, with the latter slotting home a P-Flick (helped of course by Ollie’s warm-up, and the shifty little leg kick). Another hero from last season, Master Jonny Eales, was a relentless menace down the left, whilst his brother Marcus pulled more strings in the middle of the park than the creators of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Stingray combined!

What a weekend, and what a result. After tasting victory, I’m sure Cheam 3s will now be jonesing for more. This feeling of euphoria is addictive, and so I’ll be hoping I can get my fix every week… Just like last season.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November, that time that Cheam 3s won a match. I know of no reason, why for the rest of the season, more points we don’t just go and snatch.
