Thoughts from our wise wallaby chair.

Hi all,

Hope you're enjoying the glorious summer.

A quick update on club events before we start rearranging the teams and lists into the new season.

Firstly, the AGM was held last month at Peaches Close.

The biggest change is that Krish has stepped down as Club Chair, and I have taken over the role.

I will be working on a 'many hands make light work' philosophy. There are so many things we can and need to do as a club to ensure our future - better integration between all the playing sections, a long-term strategy for coaching and player development, more fundraising, improved admin regarding regulations and membership, getting more players into umpiring, preparing for the club centenary in 2020, a feasibility study of our own Cheam HC pitch, etc.. - so if there's anything you can assist with, we'd love to have you involved! A full list of your club exec and key volunteers will be available on the website soon.

Several of you will have been staying 'fit' by playing summer hockey at Purley or Surbiton, there's more to come...

Back 2 Hockey is the England Hockey programme to bring people back to the sport and also get people involved in coaching and promotion.

The next session is this Thursday - July 20. These training sessions are outside the scope of annual subs, so there is a £5 charge for senior players (£3 for juniors/students). There are six weeks of Back 2 Hockey, spread across different nights of the week.

Juniors 7-8pm, adults 7-9pm . The junior coaches will be down as well, so returning adults can pick up a stick as the same time as their kids are being coached.

The more players we see down there the better. It promotes Cheam as a great place to play, and should there be a great influx of numbers, there's more help at hand to assist with skills, capturing contact details of newbies, etc... Or at the very least, it's a good way to run up a sweat and have a cleansing ale back at the club afterwards. So if you've been wanting to bring down a mate or a neighbour with their kids, this is the perfect time to do it! Please spread the word - share our Facebook posts and our tweets, get the message out to local social groups. We will have spare kit available for complete novices with separate skills sessions before throwing them in the deep end.

Charity Match July 23

Club stalwart Gaz Morley recently lost his father to illness. As a thank you for the wonderful care from Princess Alice Hospice, he (with his partner Emily from the L1s) are staging a charity match followed by a BBQ on July 23. Details via the link below, including the donation link if you are unable to attend.

Club Day

Put Sunday September 3 in your diary for Club Day, details to follow in due course.

The new season starts September 23 (women) and September 30 (men) so expect friendly match dates to be announced over the next few weeks.

And one more thing, for the more casual player, there will be a proper match fees/membership structure in place. So whether you will play one or every match of the season, we'll have a plan in place for you!

See you soon on the pitch,

Scott Ferguson
Chairperson, Cheam HC
