The day started in the regular Ladies 3s format. We arrived, we stretched, we warmed, we reminded each other of what Coach Oddy had said on Tuesday and finally we were ready to go.
The whistle blew and the assault began ..... Oxted came at us with everything they had. The defence, midfielders and 'stand in' keeper (Emma Laws - thank you Emma), fought them back. Unfortunately due to the captains exceptionally large feet, a short corner was given and Oxted used their chance wisely. Their direct strike at goal, found it's mark and Cheam found themselves in an all too familiar position of being a goal down.
With the half time whistle came the much needed sugar and a quick team talk. We pledged to 'up' the calling and ignore the body slamming and cussing (our ears are still burning) and we were good to go.
The second half started with Cheam on the attack and Charlie and Olivia finally proving that the Ladies 3s can beat the keeper, we were 1-1. At the very least a draw was in sight, something we'd only experienced once this season. Oxted being none too happy with the turn of events went on the attack. Their fowards finding feet in our D (for once not the 'Big Footed' Captain) and the defenders found themselves facing down short corners, determined not to let the draw become a loss. Finally with the ball cleared the midfielders and forwards ran it up the field and Erin showed us that she too can beat the keeper.
A split second of stunned silence, followed by cheers of triumph. If witnesses were asked, it's possible they'd say their were tears of joy from the sideline. Cheam were in the lead, 2-1, finally ... victory was in our grasp. In that moment, every Cheam player echoed the same thought, 'There is no way Oxted are getting another goal'. The defensive pose was struck and a 'Cheam Wall' was built and the Ladies 3s saw in their first and long awaited League victory of the season.
