We knew we were in for a tough game when we researched some of the players and discovered a fair few were Ex Middlesex Premier Division. Premier Division ... it sounds so professional.
Added to this were the stories that followed regarding their umpires, eek .... this was going to be a match like no other.
After a week of once again manufacturing players, match day finally arrived and by some small miracle we took the field with 11 players.
The opposition chose first push back and with lightning speed they zigzagged through the entire Cheam team and scored.
Clearly us ladies were caught sleeping and after the horror of a goal in under 1 minute of play we decided to clear the fog and get into the game.
Aces were a very tough physical team to play. Players in the middle of the field were toppling over like tenpins and were being bounced around the field. We had a few great runs up the filed but just couldn't get the goals (I'm still wondering how to magic forwards out of a team of defenders).
By the time the half time whistle blew the score was 4 - 0 to Aces. Coach Will gave us some positive feedback and reminded us that we were being too defensive, it was time to step the attack up a notch. The opposition were tough but not nearly as skilled as we had thought.
We started the 2nd half hungry for a goal, unfortunately that wasn't meant to be. Eleven minutes into the second half our game was abandoned. We will be facing Aces again before mid January and will see if the goal difference, second time around, will be a little lower.
Thanks to the ladies that helped swell the ranks to 11 players and to all those ladies that played in such an incredibly physical game.
As always, a special thanks to Doug for umpiring.
