Ladies brave frost bite to secure a chilly win

It was freezing on Saturday. FREEZING! And a 16:00 push back really did not help matters. Cheam were quietly optimistic and feeling a little bit feisty after a great performance the previous week resulted in only a point. Rumours circulated that an old Cheam-mate featured in the PW’s line up (the lesser spotted Ginge). And Katie N got lost looking for the changing rooms which raises the question – how has this bird made is this far into the season without visiting the ladies loo?! #camelbladder

Meg was feeling a bit bitter about Ginge getting her carded as a youngster. And it was with thoughts of vengeance, and with encouragement from Alice who was very excited to be joining us, that the ladies went out onto the field. The back line maintained discipline from the first whistle, with Jacko and Kirsty cutting short any attempts down the wing. Aside from one break down the left wing, which required a clearance from Doak and Maloney’s cheeky save off the line from the rebound, defence had everything under control. Toni was a bit bored so gave the ball away once or twice, just to keep us on our toes (‘course). Cheam conceded a couple of short corners, with the attempts at goal calmly put aside by Kirsty and Toni. Alice did an aerial. Well done.

Meg worked tirelessly in central midfield to maintain pressure on PWs and a superb performance from Viv getting all up in EVERYONES grill meant that Cheam remained firmly on the offensive. This girl got STRONG on the ball! Toni took time out of the game to demonstrate to the team and their spectators why she doesn’t play cricket. Katie made a couple of decent attempts at goal, working with Kat and Hannah to run rings around PW’s defence. Holly made great work getting the ball out of the corners to create some chances. Aside from going into half time goaless, it was only a matter of time before Cheam’s efforts would be rewarded with goals goals goals.

Cheam maintained their concentration and discipline in the second half, which I’m sure was nothing to do with the half time bribery Alice put forward to the team on Maloney’s behalf. By this point everyone was freezing and running around seemed the best thing to do. There were a couple of chances that slipped past the opposition post (WHERE WAS THE DIVE?!) and a scrappy attempt five minutes into the second half saw a 4-body pile up in the opposition D. It was Kat’s hassling of the keeper (oh hello Ginge!) that created the first goal for Cheam as she slotted it into the corner on a rebound. An excellent ball from Jacko in Cheam’s 25 found Hannah deep in PW’s half, resulting in an epic 1:1 with the keeper and a fantastic second goal. 2-0.

MOM went to Viv for unparalleled dedication and her best performance in her three years at the Club. Special mention to Jacko who played consistently well out of her usual position.

DOD went to Toni. Unanimously. We all know why.

Next week we face Camberley away, a tough fixture.
