5 Star Goalman puts Merton down and wins the Golden Stick

With this fixture re-arranged from February, and all other Surrey League games already wrapped up, there was much speculation as to which Merton team would turn up on a sunny day in SM3.

With promotion secured weeks ago, we were determined to end the season unbeaten, so the squad were pretty fired up for this one. With top-scorer (and next season's Captain) Goalman on 29 goals, and requiring 5 more to steal the Golden Stick Award away from Seb in the 1s, the rest of our forwards were in somewhat generous mood to ensure that yet another accolade be awarded to the M3s in this memorable season.

Merton came out strongly and looked confident on the ball. However, they wilted in the morning sunshine with two quick-fire Goalman strikes taking the wind out of their sails early. Their 1st XI striker threatened to break through our backline with some geniune pace, but when he did, he found Blossom in imperious form.

Goalman wrapped up an impressive first-half hat-trick and all of the talk during the break was about getting him the two further goals required.

To their credit, Merton came at us in the second half and forced a couple of openings before Goalman notched his forth with 10 minutes to play. The Cheam heroes then laid siege to the Merton goal, and with Seb himself and a large pre-Club Day crowd looking on, Levi smashed a great ball into the D. An unmarked Goalman reacted first, swung out a stick and deflected it into the far corner.

Cue delirious scenes of celebration, and an utterly bemused shaking of Merton heads as a seemingly meaningless goal was cheered like a last-minute cup final winner.

Special Mentions:
Buchols - Broke his thumb in the first half, and still came out for beers after being discharged from A&E. Lad.
Shashi - Was conscientious enough to know when the defence was getting bored, and was kind enough to give away short corners by pushing players in the back. What a guy.
Evan - Retires from Captaincy undefeated. Well played Sir.
Dom - Well, its the last game so I'll mention myself... Got left for dead during one attack in the 2nd half, and ended up on his arse. He did it 'ironically' of course.
