Dozy Start Leads To Big Finish

There are a very small number of people who cope well with early mornings. We all know the sort – annoyingly chirpy, Duracell bunny-like beings that are quick to fire with rubbish mantras and relentless, morale sapping energy. The sort that think bouncing around in the early hours of the morning when normal, better adjusted people are still working out what day of the week it is and whether they really need to drag themselves out from under the bedsheets.

It is safe to say that the Cheam Men’s 2’s are resoundingly in the latter camp.

The first minutes saw attempts to gift possession, and goals to the opposition strikers.

But, slowly slowly, Cheam warmed up and began to play some hockey, and put some strong phases of play together.

With 11 goals scored in the game, Cheam were robbed at the last with a goal scored at 5-5 in the last minute.
Despite the clear discomfort with the loss, on reflection there are a host of positives that the team should take. The team has proven they can battle back from being behind, as well as score quality goals.

Sadly, much of the second half – and the most exciting section of the game - is a bit of a blur owing to a couple of knocks to the author’s/keeper’s head. One from “gently” tripping up a striker and getting kicked in the head, the second from a sliding save taking the ball from under the strikers stick – who then continued his downswing, pounding the keepers head with his stick.

So despite sparse details (and potential inaccuracies) headlines are:
- Shep, Ruben and Gaz all scored with Madders scoring 2.
- A pitch invasion by Nick’s mum when a man was nasty to him….
- Too much mouth from Aussie getting a yellow card
- Charlie giving away a flick and clattering the striker
- A pitch invasion by Nick’s mum when a man was nasty to him…. (is that twice?)

All being well and head injury protocols allowing, normal report services will resume next week.
