Answers to Sharpys Rules Quiz

1) Substitutes. Section 2.3 of the 2006 rules restricted a team to 16 players (answer c) but the 2007 rules don’t state a limit. I don’t know if that means there is no limit!!

2) Penalty Corners. A player injecting the ball must have at least one foot off the pitch (answer c) Rule 13.3c

3) A Penalty Stroke is awarded for an unintentional offence by a defender in the circle that prevents the probable scoring of a goal (answer c) . Section 12.4a. All other answers would lead to Penalty Corners.

4) Umpire signal. A raised arm with a clenched fist means a Free hit has been advanced 10m (answer a)

5) A ball is “dangerous” when it causes another player to take evasive action (answer b). Rule 9.8

6) Free Hit, Centre Pass, or Sideline hit-in. You must be at least 5m away (answer b)

7) The Obstruction rule. Trick question. You will be obstructing if:
…you half turns to shield the ball when a player tackles you – answer a
…you barges into an opponent during a tackle – answer b
…you run across the oppos goalkeeper during a penalty corner – answer d

Running into a stationary opponent after pushing the ball past them (answer c) may be viewed as a conduct offence because you are trying to manufacture an Obstruction offence. Rule 9.15

8) Aerial balls. You must allow the receiver 5m (answer b). Rule 9.10

9) Too many players defending a short corner. Award the goal (answer b)

10) Attacker encroachment during a Penalty Corner. Award a free hit to the defence (answer a)
